Resize Images for Social Media Without the Guesswork
Practical resizing guidance for common social crops and why dimensions matter more than megapixels.
Megapixels are not the goal
Phone cameras capture huge images. Social feeds display far fewer pixels. Uploading a 12 MP photo and letting the platform crush it often looks worse than resizing thoughtfully yourself.
A practical approach
Before you post:
- Check the platform’s recommended size for that placement (feed, story, header)
- Resize with aspect ratio locked unless you need a forced crop box
- Compress lightly after resizing so uploads stay snappy
- Keep a full-resolution master offline
Full HD and beyond
For slides, YouTube thumbnails, and many desktop layouts, 1920×1080 is a useful target. Use a dedicated preset when you need that exact frame, then compress if the file is still heavy.
